This is a Japanese kotatsu which is traditionally used as a communal seating table, with heating underneath, and covered with a large blanket to go over everyone's legs to keep their feet warm.
Now renovated and fitted with a toughened glass top, it becomes a unique coffee table. The best thing about this table is the flat base, which spreads the load so you don't end up with permanent dents in your carpet. Also, the base helps the table to slide easily so you don't need to lift it to move it.
A maple version is currently at the planning stage. What would suit your room?
This light is based on a traditional Japanese andon (行灯). Made from black lacquered softwood, and fitted with a low light output bulb to cast a soft glow in a room or hallway.
